Blog was announced as “word of the year” in 2004 (Ray, 2006). Blog, short for weblog is a tool that can be used by many in order to communicate. Blogs can be used in any environment to enhance, and collaborate information. Edublogs are blogs used for education purposes in educational settings. Many teachers use edublogs in order to communicate with parents, students, and other colleagues. Edublogs can be used to communicate class announcements, grading rubric, and any other information that students need in a classroom. Edublogs also can be used to overcome communication hurdles between parent, student and teacher. They can be used to post upcoming homework assignments and communicate any additional information parents may need for the students class. Finally edublogs can be used as collaborative tools. Collaborative tools cannot only be used in edublogs for students but for teachers. Information can be blogged in relation to curriculum development and professional development (2006). That information that the teacher wants to share can be posted within the blog to further develop the blog and better get the teachers point across.

I have a 14 year old in high school and his English teacher uses blogs in order to communicate with parents and students. She posts upcoming activities, as well as her expectations for assignments. This has been really helpful for me considering I have a teenager who chooses not to communicate about his assignments.

The step into blogging has taken a while but it is very helpful especially on the educational front. I wish teachers had used blogging as an educational tool during his middle school years. The web tools available now make for easier communication between teachers, students and parents. Being able to communicate with teachers, post comments, and share information about students has taken education to another plateau. Many teachers need to get on board before they get lost. Edublogs are a really great tool that can be used for many purposes to enhance the learning experience for all involved parties.
